Some organizations require a college degree, but experience is also highly valued and will likely be considered in lieu of a degree. Previous management experience and effective leadership prowess will also likely be required as will the typical qualities of an executive, such as exceptional communication skills, leadership, planning, financial management, vision, and people skills. Some employers require formal education degrees and certifications while others look for a candidate that has relevant, applicable experience.

In order to become a business intelligence project manager, it is essential to conceptualize, create, and implement effective business intelligence strategies that provide a competitive edge for a corporation or organization. A successful business intelligence manager uses company data to identify trends quickly, improve systems and processes, increase overall efficiency, predict the possibility of potential risk, and provide more accurate and efficient management of inventory. In some organizations, a business intelligence manager may work with or lead a team, so exceptional organizational and interpersonal communication skills are a must.

The educational requirements to become a business intelligence project manager include a bachelor's or even a master's degree in business, data management,or some related field of study. Although a college degree may be required by most organizations, many will consider equivalent experience. In order to become a business intelligence project manager, proper training, certification, previous experience, or a combination of some or all of these should provide the necessary tools and skills needed to successfully perform in this position. Several years of experience using business intelligence tools or operational data management may also be required.

A strong leader will be adept at navigating through the ever-changing political currents found in every organization and still be able to produce an accurate and honest assessment of the current business intelligence environment.
