A manual treadmill is a piece of exercise equipment that does not require a power source in order to operate. This type can be ideal for home workouts. It is usually smaller and more compact than motorized treadmills. It also typically folds flat for easy storage when not being used.

This treadmill is normally supported by a frame made of lightweight aluminum. The front of the machine has handlebars or grips for a user to hold onto when working out. There are usually casters at the bottom, on one side, which allows this piece of fitness equipment to be moved easily.

The manual treadmill generally has a platform along the bottom, usually made of glass. Around this is a belt made of a substance similar to rubber. A user simply stands on the platform and begins walking in order to turn the belt and start the treadmill in motion.

This piece of fitness gear is best suited for walking, however, users may also run on it. There is no limit to how fast a user can go, because she can set her own pace. The incline level can be adjusted, but cannot be changed by pushing a button, as on a motorized version, so a walker must get off of a manual treadmill before changing the incline.

This item is relatively inexpensive. There are also no motorized parts that might need repair, so purchasing an extended warranty is usually not necessary. Caring for a manual treadmill is very easy to do because it will mainly need only to be wiped down with a solution of mild detergent and water to remove dirt and grime.

Manual or walking treadmills take up considerably less room than models with a motor. This means they are ideal for use in a small home, apartment, or even a garage. Manual treadmills typically fold quickly and easily, and can be stored underneath a bed. The lightweight and compact features make it easy to transport in the trunk of a car, should a user decide to take this piece of fitness equipment with her when traveling.

Sporting goods retailers are a good place to purchase manual treadmills. Shoppers may also find these at secondhand shops that specialize in used fitness equipment, or from private individuals. There is little need to worry when purchasing a used manual treadmill because all of the parts are easily inspected by the buyer. Also, it should last for many years with proper care and use.
