A convention manager is responsible for a number of tasks within the event management realm. He or she might plan conventions or other group functions, coordinate departments, or control an assortment of other details. In addition, he or she is usually responsible for ensuring that each function runs smoothly and for fixing any possible problems that may arise during such a gathering.

Conventions, seminars, and other types of meetings are usually coordinatd by a convention manager. He or she will generally meet with the party putting on the conference and plan details such as speaker arrangements, seating, or food and beverage details. Coordinating a variety of departments to bring together an event is another potential responsibility of a person in this position. If a facility is large, duties might be divided up and spread across different departments, leaving the manager free to plan each department’s role. When individual managers are appointed for each group, they might meet with the convention manager to coordinate activities.

The amount of responsibility he or she has in relation to the function is generally dependent on the size of the event and the number of employees at the site. Sometimes this individual is in charge of every detail of the event, while at other times the manager may have a more specific responsibility, coordinating food, sound equipment, or travel arrangements. Each job is different and will revolve around what is needed for a particular company.

Regardless of the specific tasks requiring completion, a convention manager is usually in charge of ensuring each function runs smoothly. This not only requires preparation during the time leading up to the convention, but also a great deal of work during the event. If problems arise, the ability to quickly and efficiently solve them is usually beneficial. This allows the attendees to focus on their function without being overwhelmed by potential issues.

A convention manager often conducts business with people from out of the area. Knowledge of the surrounding area and the amenities and services offered locally may be potentially helpful to someone serving in this career. Combining this knowledge with the ability to clearly communicate is likely beneficial since it allows for effective client assistance.
