There is a wide variety of military distance learning programs designed to assist military personnel in achieving a higher education. Many military employees are not able to attend a traditional university, and these programs enable them to pursue a degree from almost any location. Programs may include administrative medical career training, business management, health services, and liberal arts and science degrees. In addition to many types of military distance learning programs, there are several types of degrees that students may achieve including an associate's degree, bachelor's of science (B.S.) or bachelor's of arts (B.A.), and a master's degree in a chosen field.

The first step that military personnel should take before enrolling in a military distance learning program is to research various schools to ensure that it is an accredited program. Many of the courses offered may be called military correspondence courses, which means that the coursework has been approved by the military. If a student is interested in an alternative program, he or she should make sure that it is accredited, because this will be extremely important to future employees.

Administrative medical career training programs have many subtopics for potential students to choose from, including medical billing, pharmacy technician, medical transcription, and other various health service programs.. Some students may enter a military distance learning program to further his or her military career or prepare for a career outside of the military. The type of degree will depend on the student's intentions and preferred area of study.

Business management also has subcategories that may include accounting, business administration, finance, and criminal justice. These particular military distance learning courses are usually offered as a bachelor's or master's degree program, and accounting is also offered in an associate's degree program. There are a large number of online schools that offer various forms of business programs, and most of these courses are available as transfer credits. Students should attempt to find a fully developed program at an individual school to avoid transfer issues.

Other military distance learning programs are similar in length and structure because the courses are arranged to fit the needs of students who have varied schedules and different circumstances. Military distance learning programs are designed to be extremely flexible, and completion times may vary depending on the program and the student's availability. Most of these programs attempt to compact courses so that they can be completed in a shorter period of time than usual. Courses and related information are usually available 24 hours a day throughout the week, which allows the student to work at his or her own pace.
