Many industries are home to different kinds of engineering technologist jobs. These specialists work in manufacturing, plant operations, and the testing and design of new devices. Technologists work alongside engineers and technicians and must be well-versed in the principles of engineering in order to help bring ideas and designs to life. They work with electronic, nuclear, industrial, aeronautical, automotive, and marine technologies. As technology continues to develop, engineering technologist jobs may become available in new fields.

Some of the most common of the types of engineering technologist jobs are those in electricity and electronics. Professionals in these jobs may design new electronic devices or electrical circuits or they may make improvements to existing devices and systems. Other types of engineering technologist jobs, such as those in aeronautics or automotive technologies, are usually filled by people who have specialized in one of these fields. Often, the knowledge needed work as an engineering technologist in one of these jobs requires specific education or certification.

Any company or organization that works with technology is a potential place to find many kinds of engineering technologist jobs. Technologists are often employed by large companies, factories or plants in order to create better products or to make sure that their manufacturing processes are as efficient as they can be. These technologists may also work with existing products, machines, or processes in order to improve them.

Other types of engineering technologist jobs can be found in design and testing. In most cases, the ideas for new products are developed by people in another profession, who send these ideas along to technologists. The technologist then determines how to make the idea into a reality. Often, the technologist will make improvements to the original design, building on the engineer's ideas. Once prototypes have been created, whether by the technologist or by an engineering technician, the technologist will test the prototype and continue to make improvements on it until it is ready to be presented to the public.

Some engineering technologist jobs focus on the environment. These technologists may run tests to determine whether emissions coming from a factory are harming the environment and may develop new ways for the factory to run in order to decrease its impact on the environment. They may also have jobs that focus on cleaning up pollution, designing, and creating new tools to remove a variety of pollutants.
