What are the Different Types of Anti-Wrinkle Lotion?

There are two common types of anti-wrinkle lotion: those that simply contain antioxidants to fight wrinkles, and those that also contain retinol. In general, anti-wrinkle lotion is designed to minimize the appearance of wrinkles that are already there, and to prevent new ones from forming. Anti-wrinkle lotions and creams are usually fairly heavy, intended to be worn at night, and not during the day under makeup. This is also because antioxidants and retinol can lose their potency in the light, and are most effective at penetrating the skin at night while one is sleeping.

Anti-wrinkle lotion that uses antioxidants such as vitamins C and E to fight wrinkles can be a good choice for younger people or those without many deep wrinkles. It can help to soften and treat the skin, and while it may not be able to fill in existing wrinkles, it can prevent new ones from forming, and minimize the appearance of fine lines. Antioxidants are excellent for the skin, and also help to remove free radicals, which are pollutants that come from the environment, and have been shown to cause cell damage.

Anti-wrinkle lotion that contains retinol, as well as other ingredients such as collagen and elastin, is available both in over-the-counter and prescription versions. These help to fill in deeper wrinkles while softening and conditioning the skin. The downside to retinol, however, is that it often increases sun sensitivity, and can cause irritation in the first few weeks of use. It is a very effective wrinkle fighter, however. Because both types of anti-wrinkle lotion break down in the light, experts often recommend keeping the lotions closed in opaque containers, and inside a cabinet rather than on a counter.

Anti-wrinkle lotion often goes hand in hand with other anti-aging products. These may promise to tighten skin or remove sun spots, for example. There are also all-natural versions of anti-wrinkle lotions that may be preferable to people who prefer organic products or who have certain skin sensitivities.

Nearly all types of anti-wrinkle lotion take time to work, often weeks or months. Keep in mind that in order for retinol to maintain its effectiveness, it must continue to be used. Generally, when one stops using a retinol cream, skin will revert back to its original appearance. In addition, keep in mind that it is important to treat the skin well in order to prevent wrinkles from forming. This means staying out of the sun, wearing sunscreen and sunglasses, drinking plenty of water, eating a healthy diet, and quitting smoking.
