What are the Best Smoking Cessation Tips?

Quitting smoking is an extremely difficult, challenging process; nicotine is an addictive substance, and it will take time to overcome the desire to smoke. Smoking cessation tips will often differ, and some approaches may work better for different people. One of the best smoking cessation tips is to determine a smoking cessation plan and then stick to it; for instance, some people use tools such as nicotine patches or gum to help quit, some use a support group or a supportive friend, while others attempt to simply rely on willpower or positive affirmations about health.

One of the most often recommended smoking cessation tips is to begin by considering failed attempts to quit smoking in the past, and determine why they were not successful. After this, choose a day on which to stop smoking, and prepare for that day. Some people prepare by gradually cutting back on the number of cigarettes they smoke per day, while others attempt to only take a few puffs of a cigarette before putting it out. Then, when the day comes, get rid of all cigarettes, stop smoking, and never light another one.

Of course, this is easier said than done. Some people find that they begin to rely on food instead of smoking when they have a craving, which can be detrimental as well. Instead, another one of the more common smoking cessation tips is to find something else to focus on when a craving hits. Some people take up exercise, others will use positive affirmations, while others will simply call a friend if they get the urge to smoke. This is where nicotine gum, patches, or even prescription medication can come in handy; these products can help to slowly reduce the levels of nicotine in the body without cutting it out all at once.

The craving for a cigarette often becomes habitual, so try to mix up the daily routine a little bit. For instance, if one always goes outside for a break at work to smoke, try going for a walk instead, or even just go to a cafe to get a cup of tea. Another one of the more important smoking cessation tips to remember is that even though a craving may seem unbearable, it will pass; cravings do not typically last longer than a few minutes, so if one is able to stay busy without giving in, this particular craving will fade. As when trying to overcome any addiction, it is important to remember to take the process one day at a time, and not become overwhelmed with the idea of never smoking again.

My dad gave me a tip when I tried to quit for the first time. He told me to always carry some tooth picks with me so that I would always have something to occupy my hands and mouth.

He was right. Smoking satisfies many urges but one of them is the desire to do something with your hands and mouth. Often times smokers will also bite their finger nails. Having a tooth pick or a piece of gum can be a great smoking cessation aid because it satisfies that itch.

When I decided to quit I went to a smoking cessation support group. We met once weekly and we all had sponsors who we could work with us one to one. Having all that support really helped me get through the process.

I smoked two packs a day every day for thirty years. I was a smoker, that was just a part of who I was. So when I quit I had to figure out how to be myself again. It was not an easy process let me tell you. But having that support really helped. Smoking cessation programs help you to not quit alone.
