How do I Write an IT Cover Letter?

As you are writing your IT cover letter, much like any other piece of writing, you should consider the audience and purpose of the letter. This means you should be sure to include the name and contact information of the person to whom you are writing. You should also mention specific information about the company you are contacting through your letter, which may require some research. Since you are looking for a position in information technology (IT), you should also include mention of previous professional experience and applicable skills you have.

An IT cover letter is a document that typically accompanies a résumé, which is used as a means of introduction between the sender and receiver. As you are writing your cover letter, make an effort to ensure it reaches the proper receiver and includes introductory information. Your IT cover letter should begin with your contact information; this makes it easier for the receiver to reach you and makes it match your résumé more closely. You should also include the contact information for the company you are sending your letter to, and address your letter to a specific person whenever possible.

The body paragraphs of your IT cover letter should communicate what you know about the company and make the reader interested in you as a potential employee. You should consider doing some research into the company you are contacting, which allows you to mention any recent developments or announcements made by the company. This makes your cover letter more appealing for a reader since it shows you have not sent a form letter, and indicates that you have put effort forth in learning about the company. If you know anyone working for the company you are contacting, then you should also mention that in your IT cover letter.

You should also use your IT cover letter to demonstrate some of the skills and experience you may have in the industry. While you do not want to merely repeat the information you provide in your résumé, you can use your cover letter to expand on the information in your résumé. Since most potential employers typically read your cover letter before your résumé, you can also use the letter to create interest for the reader and make him or her want to read your résumé. You should end your IT cover letter with a polite close, such as “Respectfully Yours,” and include your name at the end.
