How do I Quit Caffeine?

In order to quit caffeine, you will need to shore up your self-discipline, because discipline is considered one of the most important factors involved in successfully changing behavior. Caffeine is addictive, so you will be constantly battling the urge to consume it until your system has been purged of all traces of the substance. In order to make it easier to kick the habit, there are a few tips that may help, beginning with determining what substances actually contain caffeine and finding a replacement for them. In addition, you should probably avoid activities that you previously enjoyed while consuming caffeine.

Most people get their caffeine from either coffee or tea, but it is also found in chocolate and many types and flavors of cola. Decaffeinated coffees and tea usually only have reduced amounts of caffeine, so you will probably want to eliminate those as well if you are serious in your desire to quit caffeine. Some people find that their caffeine cravings are somewhat reduced if they use fruit beverages as replacements. Lemonade is considered a good choice, because it can be consumed either hot or cold. This could be especially important if you have been consuming caffeine in the form of either iced or hot coffee or tea.

Changing your behavior in order to help you quit caffeine can be as simple as changing the location where you have breakfast. If you normally have a cup of coffee with breakfast while sitting at the kitchen table, try having your breakfast in the dining room instead. If you have been frequenting a specific café, it may be a good idea to find a brand new environment — one that you will not automatically associate with your favorite caffeine beverage. If you typically have a cup of coffee or tea in the break room at work, try taking a walk instead.

Discipline may end up being one of the most difficult things for you to master as you endeavor to quit caffeine. One way to help with discipline is to constantly remind yourself why you are giving up caffeine, and think about the consequences you are trying to avoid. In addition, you may want to limit your exposure to temptation. When shopping for groceries, try to avoid areas of the store where caffeine products are located. If necessary, ask other members of the household not to consume caffeine while you are present, and assure them that it is only a temporary measure, just until your cravings have subsided.
