While it may not be difficult to find a personal trainer, it may be harder to find a personal trainer that is best for you. Trainers often work at gyms and fitness centers, but they may also work independently. Doing an Internet search will turn up hundreds of choices in your locality, but before settling on a certain trainer, you will want to research his or her credentials, locations, and current clients, if possible. Meeting with a trainer in person is a vital step in the process of making a final decision, as the success of the relationship will often dictate the success of your workout and diet program.

The best place to find a personal trainer is at your local gym or fitness center. This is perhaps the most common place for trainers to work, and you will more than likely have to sign up for a membership to that gym in order to see the trainer. While the cost may be higher, the advantages may be worth the extra money; the trainer will be able to work with you regularly on professional gym machines, and he or she will be able to customize a workout program for you based on your specific needs. Being a member of a gym also allows you the opportunity to watch the trainer interact with other clients. This will give you an idea of what a session would be like with you.

If you have specific medical conditions or physical handicaps, you will want to find a personal trainer who has experience with such injuries. A trainer should have CPR and first aid training at the very least, and other physical therapy experience is even better. Your doctor may be able to recommend a specific trainer for you, or a friend or family member who has experienced an injury may be able to make a suggestion. You may be able to find a personal trainer on a list of certified trainers published by a reputable fitness organization otherwise, but be sure to check more than one resource for the trainer's credibility and credentials.

Be sure to consider your budget when trying to find a personal trainer. Some training sessions are more expensive than others, particularly sessions with trainers who are also dietitians or physical therapists. You may only need basic services, so make sure to research trainers who will provide you with those basic services at a reasonable price. Professional or serious athletes may want a trainer who can help them plan a diet as well, in which case the session may be more expensive.
