How do I Choose the Best Walking Sandal?

Walking sandals are the ideal casual footwear in warm weather. Whether at the beach, beside the pool, or out shopping, a good pair of sandals can make all the difference in how well you feel while you enjoy your favorite activities. If you are in the market for a new pair of sandals, here are some things to keep in mind.

A good quality walking sandal will always give you the support that your feet, legs, and back need. Much of this support comes from the amount of cushioning present in the design. The sandal should be sturdy enough to wear well over time, but also provide enough give and take that the impact of walking on hard surfaces is absorbed. As a result, there is less strain placed on the muscles of the feet and legs as well as the lower back.

Sandals arch support is also something you want to look for when purchasing any walking sandal design. Proper support will conform to the arch on each foot, effectively preventing the arches from absorbing and excessive amount of stress while walking. The cushioning that supports the entire bottom of the foot works in unison with the arch support to provide a comfortable fit and make it possible to walk for hours without worrying about sore muscles the following day.

The grip on the underside of the walking sandal is also very important. It is a good idea to choose a grip that will help provide the best traction on the surface you most often walk across. What you would need for walking along a sandy beach is a little different from the type of grip required for walking on city sidewalks. When looking at different designs and brands, make sure the salesperson knows where you plan on wearing the sandals most often. There is a good chance he or she can give you some ideas of what type of grip you need.

Look closely at any straps and buckles present on any type of walking sandal you are considering. They should fit snugly but comfortably over the toes and the instep, as well as around the heel. Ideally, the straps will conform to the contours of your feet while still holding the sandal in place. You can go with a walking sandal that uses several straps for a more closed look or a few simple straps that allow more of the foot to be visible. As long as the straps are strong enough to hold the body of the sandal in place without pinching or rubbing on any part of the foot, the pair is worth a second look.

As with many types of purchases, price is also an important factor when settling on a walking sandal design. Instead of going with a pair simply because they are inexpensive, try to look for sales on higher quality sandals. The inexpensive pairs are more likely to be made of inferior materials and are less likely to mold the contours of your feet for a comfortable fit. In addition, you will have to replace those cheaper versions in a relatively short period of time. Investing in a high quality walking sandal pair will save you money in the long run, as well as provide more support and comfort.
