How do I Choose the Best Acne Lotion?

You can choose the best acne lotion by researching and sampling various products. There are different causes for acne, so you should choose a product that is tailored to your individual needs. Begin by noticing triggers for your breakouts, such as noting if acne becomes worse during certain times of the month or during periods of stress. You should also take note of your skin type and where on your face or body the acne is most prevalent. Next, begin looking up different acne systems and trying various options found at your local pharmacy or department store.

The most common active ingredients found in most types of acne lotion are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Each of these is used to help dry up current pimples along with excess facial oil, as well as to kill bacteria that may be responsible for acne. If you are looking for an acne lotion to help with these problems, be sure to look for one or both of these ingredients in the options you are looking into. Benzoyl peroxide is most effective at combating acne caused by bacteria, and salicylic acid is most effective for excessive oil treatment.

Since most acne products found over the counter contain one of these two main ingredients, the best way to compare lotions is to find out how much of the active ingredient is contained in each option. Some may have both ingredients, making them more effective for persistent or hard to treat acne. Try one acne lotion at a time for one or two weeks and note if there is any improvement in your skin. If not, move on to one containing the other ingredient or both ingredients. Be sure not to combine multiple products containing the same active ingredient unless directed by your dermatologist or manufacturer's instructions.

You may also choose to experiment with natural acne lotion products or washes. Some of these, such as raw honey, are all-natural and are not manufactured by any one company. This generally makes them much less expensive than prepackaged products. There are also various organic acne treatments available at your local health food store or online. Try these the same way you would more conventional acne treatments, by trying each lotion one at a time to note any improvements in your skin.

Choosing the best acne lotion often depends on the underlying cause of an individual's acne.

Very hard to treat acne may need to be monitored and treated by a licensed dermatologist. There are prescription creams and pills available which are stronger and more effective at treating stubborn acne than over the counter options. These are often saved as a last resort because they tend to be more harsh on the skin and can cause more side effects.

If you are using a particular acne lotion, be sure to pay special attention to any adverse reactions you notice. Redness, peeling, itching, or burning are all signs of an allergic reaction. You should also be sure to read any labels carefully and to follow are all instructions for proper use.
