How do I Become a Test Engineer?

To become a test engineer, an individual must first seek the requisite education, which most often includes gaining a bachelor's or master's level college degree. Beyond the education that will help gain knowledge and understanding of this field, a potential test engineer needs to gain professional experience by working along side those in the field through internships or lower-level jobs, and sharpen his or her skills to see beyond quality to determine a product's long-term sustainability.

Quality is one of the most important components contributing to the success of any product or process. Test engineers in any industry or discipline hold the keys to potential success, are responsible for settings standards of quality, and perform an essential part in the product development. After the engineering process has been completed and the first version of the product has been created, the quality specialists and engineers must test the product, discover potential design issues, and expose problems that may cause serious failures and potential injury in future use.

To become a test engineer an individual must obtain a proper education and degree in the field of his or her choice. Most often it is a requirement for quality engineer to have a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline. When the industry is more specialized or is involved with a specific technology, a master's degree may be a prerequisite for any position in a quality assurance group. A person who wishes to pursue this profession should research his or her educational options and investigate what degree programs will provide the best foundation for success. Once in the education process, those who strive to become a test engineer most often find work along side those with the experience and knowledge gained from many years in the industry.

Internships can open a window of real-world experience while building an educational foundation for those who wish to become a test engineer in a specific industry. Most often, interns are exposed to multiple levels of the production process and will experience the engineering, development, and manufacturing of a product first hand drawing a complete understanding of their future role.

Working along side of designers and visionaries will help the future test engineer improve his or her communication skills, work in a collaborative environment, and sharpen troubleshooting and problem solving talents. Once an individual invests time educating themselves, gains the proper experience by working in the industry, and builds a skill set needed to become a test engineer and quality assurance professional, he or she will be on the career path to becoming a test engineer.
