To become a commercial locksmith, you first need enough training in the field to enable you to work with a variety of locks. Commercial locksmiths can be specialized or capable of working with many types of locks and equipment, depending on the area that you are interested in. There are schools that you can attend to learn the skills that you need, or you can attempt to find an apprenticeship in the field. You definitely need hands-on experience to become a commercial locksmith.

Commercial locksmiths are trained in the area of security for businesses and other organizations. To become a commercial locksmith, you should first graduate from high school or obtain a General Educational Development (GED) diploma. This is not always necessary, but can greatly increase your chances of being hired with a locksmithing company or attracting clients to your own business. A college degree is not needed to enter into this field, but you can attend a technical school to learn how to become a commercial locksmith if you desire a more formal education.

If you would rather attend a training program to become a commercial locksmith, you can find them in both online and on-campus formats. Since locksmiths use their hands often in their work, attending an on-campus training program might be more effective. This depends on your time and schedule, however, so you should choose a program that works for you. Another way to obtain training is to find an experienced commercial locksmith and ask him or her if you could do an apprenticeship program to learn the skills of the trade. Apprenticeships are generally paid, though you will not make as much as you will once you are fully trained and able to work independently.
