Commercial locksmiths are trained in the area of security for businesses and other organizations. To become a commercial locksmith, you should first graduate from high school or obtain a General Educational Development (GED) diploma. This is not always necessary, but can greatly increase your chances of being hired with a locksmithing company or attracting clients to your own business. A college degree is not needed to enter into this field, but you can attend a technical school to learn how to become a commercial locksmith if you desire a more formal education.

If you would rather attend a training program to become a commercial locksmith, you can find them in both online and on-campus formats. Since locksmiths use their hands often in their work, attending an on-campus training program might be more effective. This depends on your time and schedule, however, so you should choose a program that works for you. Another way to obtain training is to find an experienced commercial locksmith and ask him or her if you could do an apprenticeship program to learn the skills of the trade. Apprenticeships are generally paid, though you will not make as much as you will once you are fully trained and able to work independently.

After you have been trained to become a commercial locksmith, you can begin to apply for jobs in the field. Another alternative is to work as an independent contractor or to start your own business. If you go this route, it will be your responsibility to market your services so that you can attract commercial clients. A job application to an existing company usually requires that you fill out an application and attend an interview. It is important to showcase your best skills and attributes when you are interviewing for a position; make sure that you let potential employers know that you are hard-working, reliable, and skilled at locksmithing.
