What is Maxzide®?

Maxzide® is a diuretic that is frequently used for treating hypertension and edema. It works by promoting the elimination of both water and salt from the body, which often results in lower blood pressure and less fluid retention overall. This process might regularly result in dangerously low levels of potassium, but the triamterene in this tablet stops excessive potassium loss. The main side effect of this drug is frequent urination, which most patients can expect since this is how the body gets rid of the fluid and salt. Unfortunately, dizziness, nausea, and diarrhea are also common side effects of this treatment for edema and high blood pressure.

This pill is made up of a thiazide diuretic, called hydrochlorothiazide, as well as a diuretic that is able to keep the potassium in the body, called triamterine. In fact, the latter component works so well that this drug has been known to increase the amount of potassium in the body in some patients, especially those who are sickly, elderly, diabetic, or suffering from kidney damage. Since this can become a serious issue, some patients need to have their potassium levels consistently monitored by their doctor while taking this medication.

While Maxzide® is a common treatment for those with high blood pressure and edema, some people suffering from these conditions should not take it. For example, those are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, allergic to ingredients in this pill, or taking potassium supplements may find Maxzide® to have harmful effects. Additionally, those with abnormally high potassium levels, kidney damage, or trouble urinating should also let a doctor know about these issues before getting a prescription for this medication.

Patients are usually advised to take Maxzide® once per day, and should consider taking it during a meal if nausea typically occurs after taking the normal dose. Since this pill usually increases the frequency and amount of urination, patients should try to take it in the late afternoon or early evening so that they do not have to wake up frequently at night to urinate. It should be noted that children are not typically prescribed this medication since it may not be safe for them.

Some of the most common side effects of Maxzide® are unpleasant but minor, though other negative effects may be more harmful. For example, severe side effects often include confusion, irregular heart rate, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Symptoms of overdose may be difficult to differentiate from regular side effects, as they are very similar. They typically may occur after doubling up on a missed dose, which is not recommended, and often call for medical treatment.
