Part-time engineering jobs are available in many fields, some of which include aviation, forensics, Internet Technology (IT), and manufacturing. Engineers can work as consultants on specific projects, take internships, or participate in job sharing programs. Colleges and universities often have lecturing or assistant positions available to engineers. Depending on the industry, telecommuting may also be an option with many employers.

Consulting positions offer engineers the option of working on specific projects that they find the most interesting. When a chosen project reaches completion, the engineer is often able to consider a different job with the same company or a different company. These positions can be long-term contracts or short duration jobs. Consultants often set their own hours and may have the opportunity to travel to different job locations.

Internships can be available for engineering students and sometimes even those that have completed their degree work. A financial engineering internship is just one of these possibilities. Part-time engineering jobs that fall into the internship category will usually be limited to a set number of weeks per year. One benefit of this kind of position is the possibility of continued work with the company after degree completion.

Job sharing provides benefits for both the employee and the employer. These kinds of part-time engineering jobs may also be referred to as flexible positions. In such a situation, two or more employees share the responsibilities of job completion. Employment benefits may be included on a proportional basis to the number of hours worked per week or month.

University positions provide numerous possibilities for working in engineering fields. Engineers of all disciplines may find opportunities for teaching, lecturing, laboratory instruction, or even tutoring. Current engineering students also have the option of finding work through their schools. The work is not limited to just college or university level as high schools may also use engineers as teachers on a part-time or substitute teacher basis.

Telecommuting possibilities for part-time engineering jobs may be found in many industries, including the IT field. Software design and system operations offer a great deal of potential in a rapidly changing industry. Working from home also may allow the employee to set his or her own hours. Engineers specializing in drafting, including mechanical, electrical or architectural, may also find many opportunities for part-time work from home.

Just as there are many types of part-time engineering jobs, there are various ways to find these positions when looking for employment. Job openings can be found online through job banks, employment firms, and directly on business or college websites. Local newspapers often also list current openings in the classified ads. Networking sites are a good choice as well. Making contacts through such websites may offer information about potential work before it becomes public knowledge.
