How Do I Choose the Best Foundation for Sensitive Skin?

When you are choosing foundation for sensitive skin, it is important to pay more attention to the foundation's actual ingredients than any packaging claims, to stay away from foundations that are heavily scented, and to sample the makeup prior to applying it to your entire face. It is equally important to make sure that the foundation matches your skin tone and that it comes in a formula that looks and feels good when you are wearing it. Also stay away from formulas that contain a lot of different ingredients that ostensibly treat various skin conditions.

In many places, terms such as hypoallergenic or allergy tested have no legally enforced definition. As a result, some cosmetic companies claim that their products are suitable for sensitive skin but may not be able to actually prove that this is the case. When checking out foundations, be sure to read the ingredient label. If you see any ingredients from which you have suffered reactions in the past, stay away from that product even if it is marketed as a foundation for sensitive skin.

Be wary of foundations that contain ingredients to address other skin problems. For example, some foundations are designed for those who suffer from acne and include acne-fighting medication in their formula. Although this may be a good foundation for someone with acne, the additional medication in this product may wreak havoc on your sensitive skin. Some anti-aging foundations contain reflective particles that can minimize signs of aging, and some foundations even include sunscreen, but again, these may cause you to suffer a skin flare-up. When it comes to foundation for sensitive skin, the fewer ingredients, the better. You should particularly avoid such so-called natural ingredients as essential oils, many of which can make your skin more sensitive or trigger a reaction.

People with delicate, sensitive skin should look for a hypoallergenic foundation or BB cream that contains adequate suncreen.

Some people claim the mineral formulations are the best type of foundation for sensitive skin. Mineral foundation is certainly a popular option in many places, and there are dozens of brands that you can try. Some people even have difficulty with mineral foundations, however. Sampling any formula that interests you, even mineral foundations, by testing it on a small patch of skin can help you avoid a full-face rash or breakout. Don't sacrifice quality in your quest for foundation for sensitive skin, as the whole purpose of wearing foundation is to improve your physical appearance. Work with cosmetic salespeople to match a foundation to your skin color as well as your need for coverage.
