Ticarcillin is a generic medication prescribed to treat certain bacterial infections. For example, it may help treat stomach and skin infections, as well as urinary tract infections, severe vaginal infections, and bone and joint infections. It is a penicillin antibiotic that works to destroy bacteria by interfering with its growth.

This medication is available as an injection that will typically be administered at the hospital or doctor's office; however, some patients may be instructed to use the injection at home. In these cases, the doctor will demonstrate how to inject the medicine. It is essential that patients complete the full course of medication, even if they begin to feel better. Stopping ticarcillin too early may allow the bacteria to grow back and it may also lead to the growth of drug-resistant bacteria.

Certain precautions should be followed while using ticarcillin to treat bacterial infections. It may interfere with the results of some laboratory tests, so patients should inform the technician or nurse of the presence of the drug before they undergo these tests. Women taking birth control pills should be aware that this antibiotic can make them less effective. A barrier method of birth control is recommended.

In addition to these precautions, patients should be aware that ticarcillin may inhibit the normal clotting of blood. Patients should avoid high-impact activities, or activities with a high risk of injury. Those who use this drug for a long period of time may develop a secondary infection, which may require treatment with a different antibiotic. This drug should be used with caution in children younger than 10 years old.

Some side effects may occur with the use of ticarcillin, which should be reported to the doctor if they become bothersome. These can include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Stomach pain, giddiness, and changes in smell and taste have also been reported. The skin at the injection site may develop redness or swelling.

More serious side effects require immediate medical care. These can include severe diarrhea, severe stomach pain, and bloody stools. Vaginal discharge, pain, or irritation may be signs of a yeast infection. Dark urine, chest pain, and seizures may occur rarely. Other serious side effects can include fever, chills, and a sore throat.

Before taking ticarcillin, patients must disclose their other medical conditions, medications, and supplements. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss possible risks with their doctors. It may be contraindicated for use by those who have kidney problems, abnormal electrolyte levels, or those who are on a low-salt diet. Ticarcillin may interact with other drugs, including blood thinners, tetracyclines, and aminoglycosides.
