The connection between resveratrol, which is a type of antioxidant, and cancer stems from studies that have shown a possible connection between this supplement and cancer prevention and treatment. Some studies have shown that resveratrol may help prevent and treat breast and prostate cancer as well as leukemia and other types of malignancies. It is important to note, however, that the connection between resveratrol and cancer is not yet proven. Scientists are still conducting research to establish its effects and figure out the best ways of using it to prevent and treat cancer.

Resveratrol is an antioxidant, which means it provides at least some protection from cell damage. This substance is found in red wine and grapes as well as some other foods, so many people consume it naturally. Others choose to supplement with it because of what they've learned about its benefits. For example, many people believe the antioxidant can have a positive effect on everything from aging to fertility. As far as cancer is concerned, some scientific studies have revealed that the substance may actually help prevent the development of cancer cells or work to fight those that have already developed.

The relationship between resveratrol and cancer may involve many different types of cancers. Studies have produced positive effects in not only breast and prostate cancer, but also in cancers of the cervix and ovaries. It might also prove beneficial for cancers of the lungs and colon. Some studies even demonstrate its potential for the treatment of cancer of the esophagus. Much of the research indicates that the antioxidant helps to interfere with the growth of cancer cells, and in some cases, may even bring about the death of cancerous tumors.

It is important to note that not all research on resveratrol and cancer has proven positive. Some studies have found that the antioxidant is not effective for fighting cancerous tumors that have already formed. The fact that different studies produce varied results means scientists must continue to study the antioxidant before the medical field can say, without a doubt, that it is an effective cancer fighter.

Despite the fact that the positive relationship between resveratrol and cancer isn't definite, some people choose to consume it while they wait for research to prove its effectiveness. People can obtain this substance by consuming red wine, red grapes, blueberries, or peanuts. It is also found in cranberries. Additionally, some people choose to get it in the form of supplements, but the amount of resveratrol absorbed this way may prove less than desired.
