Muscle pain is a common problem and is typically caused by overuse or sports-related injuries. Choosing the best cure for muscle pain depends on the location of the injury and the patient's individual responses to the various treatment options. Finding a cure for muscle pain is often a matter of trial and error. Rest is often the best option, combined with ice therapy, pain medications, and exercise.

Rest is the most important cure for muscle pain. The sore muscle should be rested as much as possible, especially for the first couple of days following the injury. It may also help to slightly elevate the affected area, unless doing so causes further muscle strain and discomfort.

Ice therapy is a popular cure for muscle pain. An ice pack can be applied to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. This process can be repeated several times per day, waiting at least 30 minutes between sessions. Ice therapy not only helps to ease the pain from the sore muscle, but it also helps to reduce any swelling or inflammation that may be present. A cold shower or bath may help to provide additional relief between ice therapy sessions.

Over-the-counter medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen can be used as a cure for muscle pain. These medications help to reduce inflammation while providing relief from mild to moderate pain. Nighttime versions of these medications are available as well if the pain prevents the patient from getting an adequate amount of sleep.

After the first 48 hours following injury, exercise can be used as a cure for muscle pain. Gentle stretching exercises should be used at first. If this causes additional pain or discomfort, the exercise should be discontinued, as the affected muscle may require more time to rest. Normal activity can be resumed slowly as tolerated by the patient.

If the muscle pain becomes severe or does not respond to any of the above treatment methods, a doctor should be consulted. Occasionally, there may be a torn muscle that needs more aggressive medical treatment. Prescription medications or physical therapy may be the best cure for muscle pain in these cases. In rare cases, surgical intervention may become necessary in order to repair the damaged muscles.
