What is Home Network Management?

Although it continues to evolve, the term home network management refers to the manner in which consumers share and manage electronic communication and information devices in a home environment. This network may consist of a personal computer linked to laptops, entertainment and gaming systems, home security systems, telephones, and various mobile devices. Management of a home network means setting it up correctly, creating a secure environment in which to work, play, or communicate, and making it easy for all users to access the network simultaneously.

Most home networks are simple in configuration, consisting of a central computer station linked wirelessly to other devices, sharing the same Internet connection, files, and security. More complex home networks add electronics such as televisions, digital recorders and players, stereos, and gaming consoles. These can be set up by the average person by following the installation instructions provided by each device manufacturer or by the company that provides the Internet service.

Some home networks are set up entirely to be used through wireless devices. Home network hardware can be kept in a safe place in a convenient area of a home that transmits a connection wirelessly to all devices in certain range. In addition, a home networking device can be plugged into a laptop or cell phone to create a personal home network anywhere it’s desired.

When home network management includes the need for an entire professional office setup, an electronic security system, networked office equipment, or telephones, a professional may be needed to set up the network so that it works properly. The home network management establishes a central server station in a secure area of the home and then connects all devices to this network. In many cases, a home network will be located in a closet, basement, or attic where it can be hidden from view but accessible for network troubleshooting.

In the case of a business networking setup in which employees must share files with both a home and business network, home network management means creating a network that allows key personnel access to business files. This will usually involve encryption and passwords. This is generally controlled by corporate information technology professionals, depending on the type of network support required.

In the general sense, home network management involves the setup of communication and information equipment that is kept secure from access by unauthorized people. A very important aspect of setting up home networking is using a monitored system that provides immediate notification of a potential threat. Also, a network that is kept in a home must be maintained with the latest security and backup support available to keep it running at optimal levels.
