Desmopressin nasal spray is a prescription hormonal medication used to treat certain bleeding disorders or a medical condition known as diabetes insipidus. In some cases, this drug may be prescribed following some types of surgery to control symptoms such as increased urine output or excessive thirst. Some of the most commonly reported side effects of desmopressin nasal spray include gastrointestinal disturbances, fatigue, and muscle weakness. More serious side effects of this medication may involve irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, or seizures. Any specific questions or concerns about the use of desmopressin nasal spray in an individual situation should be discussed with a doctor or other medical professional.

The primary use of desmopressin nasal spray is to treat a form of diabetes known as diabetes insipidus, also referred to as water diabetes. This condition is thought to occur as a result of a hormonal imbalance and causes the affected person to experience intense thirst, regardless of the amounts of fluids consumed. This excessive fluid consumption results in massive amounts of urinary excretion. Sometimes diabetes insipidus occurs during pregnancy and usually goes away following delivery of the baby. Those with kidney disease or other forms of renal dysfunction may be at a greater risk of developing this medical condition.

Gastrointestinal disturbances are among the most frequently reported symptoms of desmopressin nasal spray. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are usually mild, but if symptoms become severe or dehydration occurs, a doctor should be consulted for further evaluation. Intense stomach or abdominal pain or the presence of stool or vomit that appears red or looks like coffee grounds may indicate the development of serious complications and should be reported to the supervising physician immediately. A sudden and dramatic weight gain or any loss of consciousness may suggest complications that require emergency medical care.

Muscle weakness, fatigue, and headaches are potential side effects of desmopressin nasal spray. For a headache that comes on suddenly or is excruciatingly painful, emergency medical attention should be attained. Mood swings or changes in thoughts or behaviors should be medically evaluated, as the dosage may need to be changed or the medication may need to be discontinued. A potentially fatal type of allergic reaction may involve facial swelling, difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness. While most side effects of desmopressin nasal spray do not pose serious health risks, any bothersome symptoms that develop after beginning treatment with this medication should be evaluated by a doctor.
