What is Closeboard Fencing?

Closeboard fencing is fencing made with a series of vertical slats aligned immediately adjacent to each other, creating a solid fence. This fencing method is very strong and is preferred in some regions for the increased security it offers, as people cannot see through the fence and it can be made high to prevent people from looking over it. Hardware and home supply stores usually carry supplies for closeboard fencing, including prefabricated panels for people who do not want to assemble their own fencing on site.

This design starts with the installation of a series of posts, usually anchored with concrete footers, and rails. The vertical slats are attached to the rails. People may choose to install the slats so they can't see the rails, leaving them on the outside, or can build the fence the other way around, with the slats facing out. One advantage to this design is that it is relatively easy to “step” the fencing down a grade by shifting the vertical slats, creating an even and uniform look. It is also easy to install gates, including concealed gates, in a closeboard fence.

For fenceposts, people can use wooden posts or posts made from concrete or metal, with holes drilled to accommodate bolts or screws for the rails. Engineered wood products can be utilized for closeboard fencing, as well as sawn lumber, depending on preference and local availability. The lumber does need to be treated, as there is usually some wood to ground contact and a lumber treatment will prevent rot.

Closeboard fencing panels allow people to install this type of fencing by attaching panels to each other, rather than building the fence from scratch. This option works best on very level ground, and people will still need to prepare the ground before installing the fence, including digging holes to support the posts. Installing drainage gravel at the bottom of the holes and under the fence itself is recommended so the wood never sits in standing water.

Decorative elements can be used in closeboard fencing to make it more visually interesting. While the top of the fence can be left flat, people can also use shaped boards to create a scalloped or otherwise patterned appearance. Stains can be applied to darken the fence, and people can also use decorative cutouts in the fence to provide some visibility while retaining the strength and security of a traditional closeboard fence.
