What is a Mock GMAT®?

A mock Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)® is a practice version of the GMAT® that can be of immense help in preparing to take the test. These tests are generally used as entrance exams for post-graduate business management courses. The GMAT® is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that increases or decreases the difficulty of questions based on the test-taker's previous proficiency. Taking a mock GMAT® can help test-takers prepare for the real exam, in which questions on quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and verbal expression must be answered within a strict time limit. These mock GMAT® tests can be used over and over again to help test-takers improve their potential scores by gaining mastery over the content and format of the GMAT®.

The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) is responsible for developing and scoring GMAT® tests. These tests don't usually address the test-taker's business skills, since those skills are generally learned after admission to a post-graduate business management program. Instead, the GMAT® tests verbal skills, as well as quantitative reasoning and analytical writing skills. These basic skills are considered essential to pursuing qualifications, and a career, in business management.

Preparing for the GMAT® is believed to require many hours and weeks of study. Test-takers are generally advised to master the basic skill sets addressed on the test, and to practice answering GMAT® questions as quickly as possible to have the best possible chance of completing all the test questions accurately. A mock GMAT® can be an invaluable tool for GMAT® study, since it can replicate the conditions of the exam environment.

While paper versions of the mock GMAT® are available, test-takers may get the best results from practicing with a mock CAT version of the GMAT®. The CAT version of the mock GMAT® uses the same digital format and scoring system as the real test. It increases or decreases the difficulty of each question based on the number of correct responses given previously. Using this test repeatedly during the study and preparation process can help test-takers develop the skills to complete questions accurately and quickly.

A mock GMAT® in CAT format can help test-takers develop the confidence to tackle the GMAT® in the most effective possible manner. It can help test-takers become accustomed to the testing environment, to lower stress during the real exam. Analyzing the results of these mock tests can also help test-takers identify and improve those skills that need work, prior to test day.
