What Is a Brass Flange?

A brass flange is one of the many varieties available to the consumer, since flanges are composed of assorted types of metals, dependent on their applications. Some of the different metals used in flanges, in addition to brass, include steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and cast iron. Brass is a soft metal, so it is typically not used as often in applications that require stronger metals like steel or stainless steel. High-pressure applications, for instance, have a potential to distort the soft brass, ultimately leading to failures in individual flanges or the overall flange system. Since brass is an excellent conductor of electricity, brass flanges are commonly used in a variety of electrical applications.

For example, most of the cords plugged into wall outlets are either made of or plated with brass. Using brass flanges in electrical applications helps ensure positive and safe connections. Other types of metals, such as aluminum, are prone to corrosion over time, which can interfere with the electrical conductivity and consistency of currents.

Repairing a brass flange can sometimes be slightly more complex than repairing other metal flanges, such as those constructed from steel or stainless steel. The reason brass poses more of challenge is because it is an alloy, which means certain materials within the brass do not weld as readily due to the inclusion and combination of different additives. By comparison, one could easily repair a steel flange by simply welding the break.

There are occasions when it may be more efficient to replace a broken brass flange than attempt to repair it. When it is time to replace a brass flange, it is wise to check the size of the flange. Numerous flange sizes are available to choose from, so the best way to ensure that a replacement flange will fit is to compare the new flange to the old one prior to placing an order or making a purchase.

Metal flanges, whether they are made from brass or another type of metal, provide a convenient and efficient way to bolt together pipes or tubes with ease. Brass flanges, however, tend to have specific qualities that make them better choices for certain applications, but poor choices for others. The actual use of a brass flange is no different than a flange of any other type of metal flange. Instead, the application determines the appropriate metal to incorporate in a project.
