What Does a Technical Proposal Writer Do?

Within just about every industry, a technical proposal writer can find work creating documents that are meant to persuade a certain person or group into investing, buying, or otherwise interacting with a specific business. The job of the technical proposal writer can be a difficult one, as he or she is responsible for creating a document that is impeccably crafted, convincing, and thorough in its coverage of important concepts and terms. In some cases, the proposal writer will create a document that will be submitted as a bid for a project, or used as a piece of marketing material that will convince a client to choose that specific business.

In order to be qualified to become a technical proposal writer, a candidate must usually complete a college degree in writing or a related field. He or she will need to have impeccable writing skills as well as other types of communications skills, and it helps if the technical proposal writer has knowledge and experience specific to the industry in which he or she works. If, for example, the writer works in the construction industry, it may be necessary for him or her to have knowledge of construction terminology and processes.

One of the most important jobs of the technical proposal writer is taking complex information and synthesizing it to make it more understandable. Proposals must be very clearly worded so all parties involved can understand the terms and benefits of a potential deal, and this sometimes means the writer must create charts, graphs, or even web applications to accompany written words. In other words, the writer must find the most effective ways to present complex information simply so all parties involved will have a clear understanding of what is included in the document. Sometimes the writer must also have knowledge of web applications and programs; knowing HTML is certainly useful.

While very often the technical proposal writer will synthesize ideas and information from other employees at a company, in other cases the writer himself or herself may be responsible for formulating ideas that should be included in a proposal. If this is the case, the technical proposal writer may be an employee with more than one title who has been appointed to write the proposal for a specific project. This individual may have the most comprehensive knowledge of a specific project, making him or her the best choice to act as the proposal writer.
