What are the Most Common Candida Infection Symptoms?

A candida infection occurs when the yeast that naturally occurs in the body begins to grow profusely. The fungus can take root in a number of areas of the body, and symptoms can vary based on where the infection is. Most infections take place in moist areas of the body, such as the mouth, and yeast can usually be seen as white patches on the infected area.

When a candida infection occurs in the mouth, it is commonly known as thrush. Perhaps the most noticeable symptom is the development of a white, patchy coating in areas of the mouth. These areas can become painful to the touch, especially when chewing or swallowing. Patches on the back of the throat can be a precursor to the spread of the fungus, and when it begins to spread down the throat, it is commonly accompanied by a fever.

One of the most common candida infections is the vaginal yeast infection. Candida infection symptoms include a burning sensation, especially during urination. There may also be a white discharge that accompanies a constant, itching soreness. These symptoms manifest themselves when there are already white lesions on the vaginal walls, similar to those that appear on other parts of the body during the same type of infection. The problem can occur alongside urinary tract infections or in women who have compromised immune systems.

Diaper rash is another form of yeast infection, and many of the same candida infection symptoms occur in cases of diaper rash. Lesions can appear on the skin, and can be more severe in areas where the skin folds and moisture is kept in contact with the skin. Like other forms, the lesions are often painful.

Infections can also set in on areas of the skin where there are folds, such as underneath the arms or beneath the breasts. In these cases, candida infection symptoms include a red, uneven, and slightly raised rash. This rash can be sore or itchy, and can spread to surrounding areas.

The infection can spread, although this typically only happens in individuals with compromised immune systems from another illness. If spread of the fungus occurs, candida infection symptoms include a fever, difficulty swallowing, and an inability for the body to digest and absorb food. Aches and pains throughout the body frequently occur, along with nausea, headaches, persistent cough, muscle weakness, and eczema. Once these candida infection symptoms have appeared, there is a chance that the yeast infection has spread into the blood. At this point, medical professionals can determine the extent of the illness by performing lab tests.
