Updos with headbands can look good on many different hair lengths and types, and there are a variety of styles to try. The most basic type of banded updo is one in which the hair is pulled straight back off the face with a headband, and the remaining hair is twisted into a simple bun or left in a ponytail. Fancier styles can look nice for the evening or for special events, and can include a pretty chignon, a more elaborate curled and pinned hairstyle, or a wrapped braid, among others. It can take some practice to get good at these hairdos, but they are appropriate and attractive for many different occasions.

One of the benefits to styling updos with headbands is that in some cases, the hair can still be damp when it is styled, because the headband will help it to dry flat and in place. The most common and easiest types of updos with headbands are those in which the hair is pulled straight up off the face using the headband. There are a number of different types of headbands in varied widths and different colors and styles, as this is a personal preference. The remaining hair is then styled as desired.

A simple ponytail can look nice, whether it is higher up on the back of the head or lower at the base of the neck. A bun or twist can also look good, and makes this type of headband updo look a little fancier. Some people like to create a braid or a series of braids that can then be coiled into a bun, or even wrapped around a hair as if they are headbands. It is also possible to use two headbands to make the hairstyle more interesting. For special events or just to look a little dressier, some people choose to create slightly more elaborate variations.

Other updos with headbands may leave part of the hair down; for instance, side bangs around the face can look nice. The rest of the hair may be curled and then pinned around the head in a wider style, often with a few slightly longer pieces left loose to prevent the hairstyle from looking too severe. A classic chignon, with the hair twisted at the nape of the neck and slightly to the side, is an excellent choice for many different occasions as well.
