A toddler is more likely to enjoy his new room if he has some say about what themes and colors are used. Paint or wallpaper are two types of toddler room decor, and these can be used as a base for the rest of the rest of the room's design. Window treatments and decorations can then be added to complement the wall color or design. Furniture in a toddler's room should be functional, safe, and versatile.

Before parents decorate a toddler's room, experts suggest they ask his opinion. Letting a toddler have some input on his new room will likely result in him enjoying it more. He will be more proud of his room, and therefore more apt to take care of it.

No matter what types of toddler room decor are chosen, parents should first start with a theme. Cartoon characters are often popular themes for toddler rooms, but nearly anything can be used for a theme. Boys might enjoy a sports theme, for instance, while girls may enjoy a butterfly theme.

After choosing a theme, parents can consider other the details of their toddler room decor, such as wall coverings. Paint is usually recommended for toddler rooms. It is easier and less expensive than wallpaper. Wallpaper also has a tendency to rip or curl away from the wall. Borders may be a better choice for parents who want an interesting design in their toddler's room.

Parents are usually advised to paint their toddlers' rooms with neutral or muted colors, like off white or pastels. While bright colors, like hot pink or neon green, may appeal to a small child, the child may quickly grow out of them, leading to another room redecoration. Also, murals may look spectacular to a small child, but they will most likely seem immature and babyish to an older child or teenager.

Other flashy decorations can be used as toddler room decor to add color and pizzazz. Posters and wall decals, for instance, can be added to the walls instead. These can be easily replaced as the child grows. Bright curtains can also be used to add some color.

Toddler room furniture should be functional, but it should be chosen with safety and versatility in mind. A full bed with removable rails is an excellent choice, since the rails can taken off when the child gets older. Dressers and bookshelves should also be secured to the walls, which will prevent them from falling on a child.

Choosing a safe toddler toy box is a toddler room decor detail often overlooked by parents. A toy box lid should close slowly to prevent it from slamming on a small child's fingers, head, or neck. Toy box lids with latches are also not recommended, since small children can crawl inside, and possibly become trapped. If this happens, there is also a possibility that they could suffocate.
