Back spasms can not only be quite painful, but can also be very disruptive to everyday activities. Patients who suffer from back spasms are often encouraged to start treatment by using hot and cold packs. Individuals who do not achieve success through this method are often prescribed over-the-counter medications, though in some cases stronger muscle relaxants may be recommended. Light exercise and meditation has also been proven effective in the management of pain associated with this condition. Patients must often use a combination of these techniques in order to ensure complete back spasm treatment.

Back spasm treatment can often be achieved through the use of hot and cold packs. Cold packs can help to decrease blood flow to the affected part of the body, thereby reducing swelling. If cold packs prove ineffective, patients can try hot packs. Hot packs are usually recommended for continuous back spasms that do not respond to other forms of treatment.

Some medications have proven effective at back spasm treatment. The medications which provide the best results are anti-inflammatories, such as naproxen or ibuprofen. Aspirin, however, can also be effective. Patients who do not achieve success through these over-the-counter medications may be given prescription-strength muscle relaxants. Often, these are only recommended for short use, as they have been linked to dependency; the use of these medications for periods longer than two weeks is very rare.

Light exercise can also be effective for those who suffer from back spasms. Very light cardiovascular exercise, such as walking or biking, can provide a great deal of relief. Patients are typically recommended to engage in these activities for only five minutes at a time, until symptoms improve. In addition, participating in light stretching of the lower back and upper leg can help alleviate back spasms. Patients may want to consider speaking with their physician before starting exercise to make sure they are healthy enough for the activity. For best results, these exercises should be performed under the supervision of a physical therapist.

Meditation is also an excellent remedy for this condition. Reading a new or favorite book, or participating in breathing exercises can provide an effective distraction from severe pain. While this technique is typically not used as a primary back spasm treatment, it can be used as an accessory remedy. Other alternative forms of back spasm treatment, like acupuncture, aromatherapy, or hypnosis, may also provide beneficial results.
