I remember my mom boiling some water and adding herbs like eucalyptus, cloves, lemon and oregano to the water. She would then have us drape a towel over our head and we would breathe in the steam from the water.

This did wonders to open up a stuffed nose and also helped with a cough and tight chest. It works much like a warm humidifier does, but I think it is a little bit more concentrated.

After breathing this in for about 10 minutes, we would feel so much better. If we did this right before bed, we also would sleep a lot better. I do believe that some of the herbal cough remedies are most effective.

There are many ways you can use them, but there is something about the healing properties of herbs that can really help.

My dad always had several homeopathic remedies for cough and colds. Depending on what your symptoms were, he would mix up one kind of concoction or another.

As kids, we never really looked forward to drinking them, but looking back now, they always seemed to work. I didn't mind the ones that tasted sweet and had honey in them.

The one I really didn't like was when he would take warm milk and add some black pepper and melted butter. I have no idea where he ever came up with that idea, but that was never one of my favorites.

I used to buy the flavored cough syrup from the store, but began realizing a few years ago these had some ingredients in them that I wanted to avoid. I really shouldn't have been surprised when some of the natural remedies we had as kids worked just as well for my kids today.

Almost every homeopathic remedy for cough I have ever read about contains honey in one way or another. I know people that mix this with lemon juice, lime juice, ginger and garlic with good results.

Whenever I feel like I am coming down with a cough or cold I like to squeeze the juice of a lime mixed in with some honey. You can either drink this straight or mix it in with some water.

Either way, the combination of lime and honey does wonders for my symptoms, and I also love the taste of it. It tastes much better than the fruit flavored cough syrup you buy that is loaded with chemicals.

My husband will take hot water and mix in some honey and lime juice and drink it just like a tea.

One of the best home cough remedies that has always worked for me when I have a bad cough is putting Vicks on the bottom of my feet, and then covering them with socks.

If I do this right before going to bed, it keeps me from coughing during the night. It doesn't last all night long and after about 4 hours, I can tell it is starting to wear off.

I just apply some more and then I am good until morning. This sure beats staying up half of the night because I can't stop coughing. I think you would also get good results if you used a little bit of eucalyptus oil, since that is the active ingredient in the Vicks.

I think keeping the feet covered so it really absorbs into your skin is one reason it works so well.

@turkay1-- I had whooping cough last year. I got over it with phosphorus and drosera. Whooping cough basically knocked me out. I was coughing my lungs out, my dog was getting scared from the sound of my cough. I was also extremely tired, I stayed in bed for more than a week!

I'm not sure if I would have gotten over the infection faster with antibiotics. But I had taken too many antibiotics last year and felt like I was building the immunity of bacteria. So I decided to go with homeopathic remedies instead.

It's smelly, but eating raw garlic is another great way to build strength and immunity to fight bacterial and viral infections that causes coughing. I also agree that cinnamon and honey is fantastic. When I was treating my whooping cough, I had honey and cinnamon sticks by my bedside, I would put some of both in every hot drink I had. These are some of the best natural cough remedies out there.

@burcidi-- I don't make mint or thyme tea when I'm coughing, but I do drink cinnamon and ginger tea a lot. Both cinnamon and ginger has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory qualities. It's really great for sore throat and coughing.

The last time I had a cough, my homeopathic doctor gave me arsenicum 30x. I had a dry cough, a runny nose and was shivering cold. He looked at my symptoms and told me to take arsenicum tablets for a week. It helped a lot.

I like homeopathic treatments better than regular medicine. I feel that it's safer and has less side effects. But some people make the mistake of diagnosing themselves and try to buy homeopathic medicines online. I always go to my homeopathic doctor for prescriptions and purchase my medicines from there.

When I was a child, whenever I had a cold, I would develop a horrible persistent cough that would keep me up through the night. My mom would always make two home remedies for me that helped.

One was mint tea with honey and lemon. Not only would this tea settle my stomach, soothe my throat and help clear phlegm, but it gave me strength too.

The other remedy was the hot water steam remedy the article also mentioned. We didn't have humidifiers back then, so my mom would boil water and put it in a large plastic bucket. She would make me hold my face over it and cover my head with a towel to prevent the steam from getting out.

The steam would make me cough more while I was breathing it in, but I think that's because it works as an expectorant. After about twenty minutes of that, I would feel so much better! I could breathe well and sleep without coughing so much.

I still make mint tea with honey now, but for steam, I use a humidifier. My humidifier has a little place to put eucalyptus oil. I turn the humidifier on before I go to bed and get a good night's sleep.
