Dermatitis is a condition that could have many different causes, and dermatitis remedies may vary accordingly. Generally, dermatitis is treated using steroid creams, wet compresses, and allergy medications. Some herbs that are believed to be effective in the treatment of dermatitis are calendula and gentian.

Many dermatitis remedies are available at pharmacies, and do not require a prescription. One such medication is hydrocortisone cream, and it seems to be one of the more effective dermatitis remedies. It is generally effective in treating most all kinds of dermatitis. Hydrocortisone cream is a topical steroid that helps reduce inflammation, and may help stop itching. In addition, hydrocortisone is also believed to have properties that could help promote healing.

Dermatitis is often caused by contact with something that creates an allergic reaction in the skin. In these cases, the first method of treatment is typically to get rid of the allergen. For instance, many people have allergic reactions to different types of laundry detergents. Sometimes discontinuing use of that specific detergent will result in the dermatitis clearing up without further treatment. Many people who have dermatitis caused by allergic contact may not be able to pinpoint what is causing the condition, and in these instances, it may be advisable to consult an allergy specialist.

Applying wet compresses to the skin is another treatment for dermatitis. This treatment is sometimes used in conjunction with herbal dermatitis remedies. Wet compresses not only soothe, but can advance healing, and though heated compresses may be more soothing, cold compresses could actually be more effective. Some herbalists recommend salves containing calendula or gentian, both of which are believed to be good treatments for inflammation and itching. Ideally, these salves should be applied right after the compresses have been removed.

One type of dermatitis, called neurodermatitis, is a symptom of a type of behavior disorder. Dermatitis remedies associated with this type of condition may include the use of antidepressants or other anxiety medications. People who suffer from neurodermatitis sometimes have bouts of uncontrollable scratching, which often leads to dermatitis.

Dermatitis is not generally considered a serious condition, but in some cases, it may not clear up without the help of prescription medications. Doctors can prescribe steroids that are much stronger and effective than the ones available over the counter. It is generally recommended that if home dermatitis remedies do not clear up the condition within 10 days, a doctor should be consulted.
