When it comes to getting the most from your high-speed connection, many people assume there is nothing that you can do; your provider is the only source that can determine your speed. While it is true that your choice of provider and the structure of your provider’s network has a great deal to do with how efficient your 3G bandwidth actually is, there are in fact elements at your end that can negatively impact the actual speed you enjoy. Here are some tips on how to make some changes and enjoy your 3G service to the fullest.

Whether you are dealing with 3G bandwidth that is routed through an Ethernet connection to your desktop or via a 3G wireless connection, the capabilities of your computer will make a difference in how well you can utilize all that speed. Many businesses that still have networks with a number of hubs built into the system may find that the Internet connectivity seems to get bogged down, sometimes to the point that it is difficult to accomplish anything online. If this is the case in your workplace, replace those hubs with switches. You’ll see an immediate difference in the speed.

For people with 3G bandwidth at home, you will also want to look into the amount of resources you have on the hard drive. Simply put, if you don’t have enough RAM on your hard drive to allow the connection to work efficiently, you will not get the full benefit of your 3G Internet connection. You may also find that your operating system is too old to handle the connection. In both scenarios, upgrade your equipment and software so that it is compatible with the product offered by your service provider, and at least meets their minimum standards for efficient use.

The same advice is relevant to the wireless connection for your laptop. If the device does not have the proper resources to process the 3G bandwidth connection, you will get much less from your investment. Talk with your provider about what you need in terms of RAM to get the maximum benefit from your 3G wireless connection, as well as what they consider the best operating system for your system.

Keep in mind that there are only so many upgrades you can manage with older equipment. In the long run, you may find it to your advantage to invest in a newer desktop or laptop in order to get the best 3G bandwidth possible. Once your equipment is up to current standards, evaluate the service performance of different providers in your area that offer 3G bandwidth. There is a good chance that one or two will provide significantly better service than the rest, which will make getting the most from your connection a lot easier.
