The best work abroad opportunities are ones that are well-matched to one's skill set, offer an opportunity to learn, and also offer any necessary financial compensation. Some people are interested in working abroad simply for the experience and are willing to break even, or even take on a small amount of debt in order to work in another country. Others are interested in working abroad for financial gain of varying levels. These are two very different situations and there are opportunities for people who are in both situations.

There are work abroad opportunities for people in many different stages of life. For example, there are work abroad opportunities for people who have recently graduated from college, are taking a year off of college, or want to work abroad for a year or so before beginning their university studies. These sorts of work abroad opportunities often cover the basic needs of the workers such as food, lodging, and travel. They may also offer a small stipend or allow workers to take their payment as a college tuition credit.

Some churches may have money available to share with people who want to travel abroad on mission trips.

Other work abroad opportunities are geared toward people who are further along in their careers or are looking to make a change or shift in their careers. These kinds of opportunities are usually a bit higher-paying than the ones described in the previous paragraph. They may be offered through one's present company or through a different organization. One of the most important things when choosing between work abroad opportunities is to consider how the opportunity will fit in with one's present career. It is also important, especially for people further along in their careers, to consider how work abroad opportunities can help to meet one's career goals.

For people who are looking for more short-term work abroad opportunities, there are many organizations that rely on volunteers to help them with their work overseas. These work abroad opportunities often offer little to no compensation for the workers. However, sometimes people take advantage of these opportunities by asking sponsors to help pay their way. It is not uncommon for church groups to work to volunteer abroad using funds raised within the congregation to cover the cost of travel and to pay for the basic needs of the volunteers during the trip. These sorts of short-term work abroad programs can last anywhere from a week to a few months.
