If you want to choose the best probation officer schooling, you should consider the job you want, such as juvenile probation officer or federal probation officer. There are many factors to consider when choosing a suitable school. For example, some employers may require firearms training or other hands-on training that usually is not available from online schools. Other factors for you to consider when choosing a school include class size, the instructors' qualifications, and school accreditations. One of the best ways to choose a school is to research what the employer or career requires.

Some of the best sources for researching a job's requirements are high school, technical school, or college guidance counselors; probation officer job advertisements; and various school resources. Job advertisements list several job requirements, such as the schooling or training necessary for the position, any essential experience in the field, and what licenses or certifications are mandatory. Colleges, technical schools, and other training institutions offer information through their counselors and their literature, which is frequently available online. Interviewing probation officers, companies, or agencies that employ probation officers and other people who work in the field can also be tremendously helpful.

Many different types of schools and institutions offer probation officer schooling, including online schools, public and private colleges, and police academies. Likewise, many technical schools and colleges offer probation officer training. When choosing one of these schools, research the type of degree or certification each offers as well as whether the credits will transfer. Some employers require training at specialized schools, such as a police academy or other institutions.

Sometimes there are special considerations that you must research before choosing the best probation officer schooling. Many local, regional, and national governments have regulations governing probation officer schooling requirements. These often change depending on whether a person is seeking a position as a federal probation officer, juvenile probation officer, or another specialized position. Another factor is the position you desire, including entry-level jobs, supervisory positions, or other specialized positions. An example of a position that requires specialized probation officer training is a surveillance officer.

Often one of the most important factors is a financial one. There are several programs in place to help a person pay for probation officer schooling, such as grants, loans, and other sources. Generally, you should check for government plans, but in the U.S. government financial aid frequently covers courses only at accredited or certified institutions. Sometimes a person's employer — public or private — will pay for the schooling or pay a portion of it. Another source of funding is through the school, especially police academies and other certified training centers.
