How do I Choose the Best Futon with Storage?

Comprising a couch, a bed, and a storage unit in a single piece of furniture, a futon with storage can be an excellent option if you are trying to maximize a small living space. With the abundance of products available, however, choosing a futon with storage can be an overwhelming process. To find the best futon for you, first consider whether you would prefer a traditional model or a more modern-looking product. Then take note of the décor in your room, and decide which finishes and fabrics would best suit your space.

As you begin your search for a futon with storage, consider whether you would prefer a traditional model or a more modern-looking one. Traditional futons generally feature an exposed frame made from wood or metal on which a foldable mattress is placed. These frames can be locked into an upright position to provide sofa-style seating, or unlocked to provide a flat sleeping surface. Storage in traditional futons usually takes the form of drawers found between the underside of the seat and the floor. Some models feature open storage compartments at their sides, in which small objects such as magazines and remote controls can be kept.

If you would prefer a more streamlined style, you may wish to choose a modern-looking futon with storage. Many modern futons feature frames which are totally concealed inside two non-removable cushioned and upholstered platforms. As with traditional futons, these models can be locked into an upright, seated position or unlocked to create a sleeping surface, but in appearance they are almost indistinguishable from a normal sofa. They feature a fully hidden, chest-like storage space in their base, which is accessed by lifting the bottom half of the “mattress.”

After you have decided whether you want a traditional futon or a modern one, you will be ready to consider the details of your preferred unit. Study the décor of the room in which the futon will be placed, taking into consideration the style of your other furniture pieces as well as the room’s color scheme. Then you can determine which finishes and fabrics would best suit your space. If, for instance, you would like to purchase a traditional-style futon and your room is decorated in a country farmhouse style, you might consider a product with a frame and storage drawers made from distressed wood. Should you wish to purchase a modern-looking unit to suit a contemporary decorative scheme, you might look for solid-colored pieces that feature simple tweed fabrics.
