To become an electrical lineman, a combination of training, education and experience in the utility field is usually required. Electrical linemen work for utility companies to help set up power lines, regulate voltage, handle electrical cables and test electrical equipment. This position requires working primarily outdoors and at heights in many instances, so it is necessary to have a certain level of fitness, the ability to work outdoors and knowledge and skills with tools.

Typically, the first step to become an electrical lineman is to pursue the education that is needed for the job. There are programs offered at technical colleges specifically for this line of work. The education is not always necessary to get a job, but can be a good first step if an individual does not have experience working in the utility field for a utility company. Classes in these programs include basic mathematics and measurements, algebra, and safety basics. Electricity and electronics are also studied, usually covering topics such as skills and equipment, and electric power distribution.

Electrical linemen training and apprenticeship programs are also offered directly through utility companies. This means that an individual would be getting paid to learn how to become an electrical lineman. In this case an individual is assigned an experienced mentor that helps to train them on various aspects of the job. This is a more hands-on approach to learning than taking classes in a classroom. Contact utility companies in the area to find out about opportunities for training at their organization.

This requires a certain amount of physical dexterity in the use of equipment and tools. Individuals who are good working with their hands will find more success in this field than those who are not.
