If your career goal is to become a telecommunications director, you need to have a good educational background to qualify for this type of position. Most telecommunications companies looking to hire someone for this type of position are looking for a candidate who has at least an undergraduate degree. The first step on the journey to get qualified is to enroll in a bachelor's degree program in Computer Electronics and Telecommunications. This degree teaches students the fundamentals of how to work with hardware and software. Courses in subjects like fiber optics, computer networks, and digital media help to prepare students for several career choices, including that of telecommunications director.

A university-level education in telecommunications allows students to gain knowledge in this subject area, but it is also valuable in other ways. Attending a post-secondary institution allows students to develop their communication and critical thinking skills. Being able to express ideas clearly is a valuable skill that can be applied by many types of work. If you want to become a telecommunications director, you will need to be able to communicate clearly with coworkers and other managers about issues affecting the company's telecommunications hardware, software, networks, and other equipment.

Becoming a telecommunications director also requires a number of years of work experience. This type of position is similar to that of a department head. The individual will need to have a good understanding of the systems the company currently uses, as well as the ability to develop policies that will improve user experiences while keeping a close eye on financial considerations.

Someone wishing to become a telecommunications director may continue their education by studying for a master's degree on a part-time basis. He or she may choose to attend classes on campus or meet the requirements for the advanced degree by studying on a telecommute basis. Completing a master's program builds on existing skills, and graduates have the upgraded education necessary to qualify for a management position with a telecommunications carrier.

Part of the duties of anyone who wants to become a telecommunications director involve project management. Combining an undergraduate degree in computer electronics with a master's degree in business administration gives future directors the business education, communication and project management skills they need to perform the duties of this job.
