Due to the highly technical nature of most of these positions, you may need a college degree to become a security administrator. Most of these jobs are provided by companies that need protection for their information technology. Although not all of these positions are completely based on technology, most are involved in some aspect of computer security. Larger corporations may require that you have a master's degree in a computer science related field. Before choosing this profession, you should research job details to determine the right career choice for you.

Most people who enter this field have a preexisting interest in computer software and components. Information technology is a computer-based degree program that will help you become a security administrator and most universities offer this or a similar bachelor's degree program. There are other types of majors that you could pursue, but this particular topic may be preferred by most companies.

Once you have completed mathematics and science prerequisites, you may want to register for information technology courses. These may include principles of programming, data center design and administration, and understanding computer networks. These are some basic courses in the field that will prepare you for advanced coursework such as database administration, information storage management, and special topics in information technology.

Many of these courses will be accompanied by computer laboratory work that will provide you with the fundamentals of the industry. In addition to gaining experience by working in a lab, you will want to have outside experience during college. Internships are excellent opportunities to familiarize yourself with the industry. Your professors and computer science department should be able to help you find internships that will help you to become a security administrator.

Experience is extremely important to entering this field. Ideally, you will want to participate in as many topic-related activities as possible. This is primarily a hands-on profession and your proficiency with computer programming will be an essential attribute to become a security administrator.

Although a bachelor's degree is often what's required to become a security administrator, you may want to consider obtaining a master's degree in order to increase your employment options, salary rates, and career advancement opportunities. Some companies may require that you have at least five years of experience in the field and you may want to begin in an entry level position and work towards a promotion. Some internships may lead to employment therefore you should display field-based competency during these earlier experience opportunities.
