How Do I Become a Planning Technician?

In order to become a planning technician, you will need to have a college education, training, and experience. The type of degree may vary depending on the job, and some companies may accept an associate's degree in addition to several years of experience. Many planning technicians choose to work on a bachelor's degree while gaining experience through internships. Although most companies will not require that you complete a four year program, a bachelor's degree will increase your opportunities to become a planning technician. This is a highly technical position and you will need to be extremely knowledgeable of mathematics and technology.

When researching a degree program that will help you to become a planning technician, you may want to consider programs that are based on construction management, architecture, or urban planning. Once you have found a university that has a well-developed program in your field, you will be required to complete general courses in science, math, and other basic coursework. Advanced coursework in your major may include blueprint reading, construction specifications, contracts and related law, construction planning, and materials and methods. Most universities that offer technical programs in construction or architecture usually provide internships for any student who would like to become a planning technician. This can give you a chance to observe professionals in the field and learn about the industry before graduation.

After you earn a bachelor's degree, you may want to consider an additional training program that offers job placement. These short term programs generally combine education on specific field topics with hands-on training and may also offer placement after completion. If the program does not offer employment assistance, it will still improve your skills that are needed to become a planning technician. This position involves a number of duties including reviewing zoning permit applications, organizing building plans, researching information, and preparing charts and maps. Although an education will prepare you for the position, additional training can assist you with applying your knowledge to the position.

Most companies are looking for candidates with excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills because the job will require that you discuss plans, procedures, and rules with employees and other professionals. In addition to verbal skills, you will need to be organized, work well with a team, and have technical writing, problem solving, and leadership skills. This job can be fast-paced and you will need to be able to work on several projects simultaneously.
