How Do I Become a Logistics Planner?

The responsibilities of a logistics planner include the oversight and management of resource acquisition, distribution, storage, internal allocation, delivery, and final disposal for a company or organization. Knowledge of various industry-related software and hardware may also be required for this job. Top level communication skills are a must, as a logistics planner will be working with so many different types of people. The proper education and training can be acquired through the military or by earning a college degree, and some professional organizations offer various certifications to indicating that certain criteria or standards have been met.

A working knowledge of computers and computer systems used to set up specific functions, write software, process various types of information, and enter data is required for this job. Logistics planners also need to know how to effectively utilize computer software programs used for charting, accounting, and computer-aided design (CAD). They must also be familiar with customer relationship management (CRM), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications.

In order to become a logistics planner, you must have the skills that will allow you to analyze and coordinate the many production functions in a company or organization. One of the most important skills needed for this job is the ability to effectively monitor and assess the performance of the specific logistical processes used by a business. Effective communication skills are also needed, as logistics planners will develop and maintain relationships with key personnel both inside and outside of a company or organization. The ability to manage every aspect of a product from initial design and creation to manufacturing and final delivery is required for anyone who wants to become a logistics planner.

Minimal educational requirements to become a logistics planner are at least an associate's or bachelor's degree with a concentrates in computer technology, business, or mathematics. Due to the possible international scope of this profession, coursework for those wanting to become a logistics planner should include one or two years in a foreign language. Logistics planners may be professionally recognized or qualified by meeting various sets of industry standards. Such certifications include, Certified Master Logistician, a Certificate in Transportation and Logistics, and a Certified Professional Logistician.
