Also known in many areas as a fish and game warden, a fish warden is a law enforcement professional who is charged with the responsibility of protecting the integrity of state and national parks, both in terms of ensuring the safety of the citizens who make use of those parks as well as making sure that the environment and wildlife found in the area is also protected as outlined in the laws and regulations that apply in that area. Choosing to become a fish warden is a career path that requires training and certification as well as meeting all criteria required by the jurisdiction in which you plan to work.

The actual criteria to become a fish warden varies from one area to another, depending on the types of requirements put in place by local jurisdictions. Typically, a candidate for this type of career in law enforcement must meet minimum standards in terms of age, fitness and educational credentials. It is not unusual for many areas to require that any candidate who wishes to become a fish warden possess some type of college degree, such as a degree in criminology or possibly environmental sciences. Additional training may also be required prior to being allowed to submit an application and participate in an exam for any currently open position at a local or state park.

Experience and knowledge in a number of related fields will also aid in realizing the goal of becoming a fish warden. Young people who are still in school will want to focus on science classes that help to expand their knowledge of wildlife and the environment. Working in some capacity in a wildlife preserve or a state park prior to applying to become a fish warden will also be helpful in many instances. When coupled with educational credentials, practical experience that is somehow related to the job itself will always be helpful.

Many jurisdictions will also require that fish warden candidates undergo an extensive background check that will look into issues such as academic performance, social activities and any past legal issues. Along with the background check, candidates who are being considered closely will also undergo rigorous physical and mental checks to make sure the individual is capable of functioning in a variety of different situations without collapsing under pressure. This is especially important, since a farm warden is a fully functioning law enforcement officer and may face situations very similar to those of any police officer.
