Although a bachelor's degree may not be required to become a clinical technologist, you may want to consider obtaining one to increase your employment options and career advancement opportunities. Some schools may offer degree programs in medical technology which will prepare you for this profession. This is an extremely technical field and you will also need hands-on training to become a clinical technologist. Most of the coursework in a medical technology program will be accompanied by laboratory work which may provide you with additional training.

Some universities offer degree programs in clinical laboratory science or medical technology, which are very similar and will prepare you for a job in this field. Advanced coursework may include clinical laboratory science, medical terminology, microscopy, and clinical chemistry. Some of these courses also require work in a laboratory.

An internship in the field can help you become a clinical technologist. These can be excellent learning experiences because they allow you to apply your knowledge to clinical practice, and observe other professionals in the field. There may also be volunteer opportunities in a medical setting that can be helpful to you as well.

Upon graduation, you may want to find additional training experiences or entry level work in the field. Some companies may offer on-the-job training in order to familiarize you with their particular company. You may also need to have technical writing abilities, good hand-eye coordination, and organizational skills to succeed in this profession. Many students opt to continue their education and receive a master's degree to significantly increase job options.

After you have completed all of the necessary requirements to become a clinical technologist, you should create a resume that details both your experience and education in order to apply for a job in this field. This is where past volunteer work as well as any completed internships becomes extremely helpful, as employers often look for those with practical experience to fill positions. Some locations may require that you pass a certification exam to become a clinical technologist and you should research local guidelines in the area that you intend to work in.
