How Do I Become a Behavioral Health Technician?

Amy Rodriguez

Many pathways are possible to become a behavioral health technician, including earning an associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree. Aspiring technicians that do not have any college education can also work in this career area as long as there is substantial mental health field experience, like working as a counselor. Even with a high level degree, many employers will still require specific on-the-job training before you can become a behavioral health technician.

Often, a two year degree in an associated major, like substance abuse counseling, can help you on your pathway to become a behavioral health technician. You should keep in mind that the associate's degree will not be the only requirement for employment; most employers look for applicants that have two years of mental health experience in a previous job position. Choosing the two year degree is appropriate for someone looking to move within the mental health industry, rather than trying to begin an entirely new career path.

A bachelor's degree in a related science to mental health, such as psychology, is another way to start a technician career. Along with a degree, employers will look for at least one year of mental health experience; this experience can be gained by completing a college internship. Most four year colleges require an internship of each student to satisfy graduation prerequisites. As a result, you will gain valuable hands-on experience during college and the internship for a successful career position.

Of all the degree programs, a master's degree in mental health does not normally require any job experience for future employment. You should keep in mind that a master's degree can take several years to earn, especially since a bachelor's degree is commonly required before starting any master's program. Employers will see the extensive education and realize that you will be a smart addition to the team.

Those aspiring behavioral health technicians that do not have any college education need extensive experience on their resumes. Typically, at least four years of mental health experience is required before any employer will hire you. This career pathway can be useful for those employees that have worked for many years and desire a change in career outlook.

Each business that employs behavioral health technicians has slightly different needs and requirements during the work day. Any new employee, regardless of education and experience, will need on-the-job training initially. Most often, you will be mentored by an experienced technician to learn all the daily procedures and regulations.
