Does Queen Elizabeth II Ever Drive?

Queen Elizabeth II is 92 years old, but she's not slowing down -- not even in her car. As the monarch of the United Kingdom, the Queen is the only person in the country who doesn't have to worry about pedestrian things like getting a driver's license or having license plates on her vehicles. Nor has she ever had to pass a driving test. That might sound like real royal treatment, but keep in mind that then-Princess Elizabeth first got behind the wheel as a member of the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II. In that capacity, she worked as a mechanic and drove military trucks. Now, of course, someone else takes care of her cars. It's good to be queen.

Meet the Queen:

  • In 1998, while entertaining Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, the Queen insisted on driving her guest around the Balmoral estate in her Range Rover.
  • Besides being driver's license-free, the Queen also doesn't need a British passport -- which are all issued in her name, anyway.
  • Queen Elizabeth II celebrates two birthdays every year: her real one, on April 21, and her official one -- usually in June -- as part of the Trooping the Colour parade.
