What Is Involved in Bladder Inflammation Treatment?

Bladder inflammation treatment depends on the cause of the inflammation. Also known as cystitis, bladder inflammation can be caused by bacteria, medications and chemicals as well as some conditions, such as diabetes. Treating the underlying cause of the inflammation reduces or stops symptoms that are experienced. Taking antibiotics, adjusting medications, and reducing chemical exposure are common treatments. Chronic inflammation that has no known underlying cause, also called interstitial cystitis, can be treated with bladder control and anti-inflammatory medications in addition to medications that protect the inner lining of the bladder walls.

Bacterial infections are the most common cause of bladder inflammation, especially in women. Escherichia coli is the type of bacteria that is frequently responsible for causing bacterial infections in the bladder and urinary tract. Women have this bacterium naturally in the genital region, which makes them more susceptible. Men often suffer an infection after sexual intercourse with a woman who already has an infection. Bladder inflammation treatment when a bacterial infection is the cause involves antibiotics and avoiding intercourse.

When inflammation of the bladder occurs as a result of a reaction to medications, a different approach is taken. The medication is often changed, either by switching to another medication or by reducing the dosage as a bladder inflammation treatment. As the body adjusts to the change, the inflammation should subside. While the body adjusts, pain relievers are often suggested to help relieve discomfort.

Chemical exposure is another cause of bladder inflammation. Women and young girls often use soaps, perfumes and bath additives. These chemicals can enter the bladder through the urethra and cause inflammation. Repeated use of these chemicals causes the inflammation to worsen and symptoms increase. Bladder inflammation treatment in this case involves refraining from the use of chemicals and increasing water intake to flush out the remaining chemicals.

Interstitial cystitis is the condition where bladder inflammation is chronic and leads to damage to the bladder wall. This condition involves a different approach to bladder inflammation treatment. Prescription medications are provided to reduce inflammation and pain. In many instances, another type of medication protects and repairs the bladder wall.

Regardless of the cause, bladder inflammation treatment works to correct the symptoms that occur. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with pain or discomfort. Drinking plenty of water and urinating when necessary can help prevent many causes. Women should also wipe from front to back to avoid exposing the urethra to bacteria.
