Most people are able to use conivaptan without experiencing any particularly bothersome side effects, although any new symptoms that develop after beginning treatment with this medication should be reported to a doctor for further evaluation. Insomnia may occur as a result of using this drug, but this problem normally lessens as the body adjusts to the drug. Mild to moderate headaches are considered normal, although sudden or severe headaches may indicate severe complications such as an aneurysm and should be reported to a doctor right away.

Mild to moderate gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea or vomiting may occur when taking conivaptan. Constipation, diarrhea, or abdominal cramping may also occur. Black or bloody stools or vomit that resembles coffee grounds should prompt immediate medical attention to rule out the development of any severe complications. Sudden or severe abdominal pain, especially if accompanied by a fever, should be treated as a medical emergency.

Less common but potentially serious side effects of conivaptan may include changes in heart rate, the appearance of blood in the urine, or an extreme or unquenchable thirst. A type of fungal infection known as thrush may develop, causing white patches to appear in the mouth. Allergic reactions can range from the development of a mild skin rash to potentially fatal symptoms such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing. Other side effects are also possible, so the patient should consult a member of the medical staff with any questions relating to possible side effects of this medication.
