What Is Clobetasol Foam?

Clobetasol foam is a topical corticosteroid which is used on a short-term basis to treat severe skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Due to its potency, it is available in most countries by prescription only. Corticosteroid preparations, such as clobetasol foam, work by inhibiting inflammatory processes. Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis often have a large inflammatory component which may cause redness, swelling and itching. By counteracting these inflammatory processes corticosteroids can decrease this.

A wide range of corticosteroid drugs are available in the class, ranging from mild to very potent. As with any medication, corticosteroids may cause undesirable adverse effects and for this reason the mildest possible preparation will be prescribed for the shortest possible time. Adverse effects may include thinning of the skin, irritation or redness and, if used long term or at too high a dose, systemic adverse effects involving the adrenal glands.

When prescribing clobetasol foam, the doctor will give instructions on how it should be applied and how often. The prescribed dose and timing of application should not be exceeded, and in particular, clobetasol foam should not be used for longer than two weeks consecutively. Repeat courses may be prescribed but this should be done only under strict medical supervision.

Application of clobetasol foam to the scalp or skin should be done carefully. A small amount should be applied thinly to clean, unbroken skin and rubbed in. Hands should be washed after application and the area should never be covered with a bandage or plaster, to prevent excess systemic absorption. Clobetasol foam should never be applied to the eyes, mouth or nasal passages.

As with any medication, clobetasol foam may be contraindicated in patients with some clinical conditions, so any underlying medical disorder should be discussed with the prescribing doctor before starting treatment. Pregnancy, desired pregnancy or lactation should also be discussed. Other medications, including homeopathic, over-the-counter and complementary medication may interact with corticosteroids so these should also be disclosed to the doctor.

The use of clobetasol foam by psoriasis and eczema sufferers may bring about drastic improvements in their skin. It is important to remember that it is a potent corticosteroid with the potential for adverse effects so it should be used only under medical supervision for a short period. It may be used initially to treat a severe case which may then be kept under control using a weaker preparation which is less likely to cause severe adverse effects.
