A low-carb protein bar is a food item that looks like a candy bar but is designed to deliver a dose of specialized nutrition. As the name suggests, a low-carb protein bar generally has a minimal amount of carbohydrates and a generous helping of protein. Some of these bars are intended as snack bars, while others are meant to be used as meal replacements.

Many people believe that the key to good health and weight loss is a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein. Some studies suggest that a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet will help an individual to burn fat, have more energy, and maintain a healthy weight. Due to the different ways in which carbohydrates and proteins are digested, a meal that is high in protein and low in carbs will typically keep a person feeling full and satisfied longer than if he or she had consumed a meal heavily laden with carbohydrates.

Regularly consuming a high amount of lean protein while avoiding carbohydrates is a difficult challenge for many people. Often, it is hard for individuals to find the time to plan a complex meal that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. A low-carb protein bar is intended as a solution to that dilemma. Most bars of this type are conveniently packaged in single-serving wrappers and are easy to take along to use as either a meal replacement or a snacking alternative.

Due to the high protein content, a low-carb protein bar will tend to have a very distinctive taste that many people find unappealing, especially if they are expecting the taste of a candy bar. In order to compensate for the unique taste, many manufacturers of these bars have come up with different ways to flavor them. Frequently, low-carb protein bars come in such tempting flavors as peanut butter nougat, almond crunch, and chocolate fudge. Despite the appealing names, though, one brand of low-carb protein bar might taste better than another, and often the flavor is a matter of individual preference.

While some low-carb protein bars are designed with dieters in mind, not all such bars are made for individuals who are trying to maintain or lose weight. Some bars have high fat and calorie contents along with high protein. Other bars might claim to have low net carbs but may have a high total carb content.

The term net carb is based upon how carbohydrates are digested and how they affect a person’s blood glucose levels. The net carbs of a particular food are generally determined by adding or subtracting the amount of fiber and sugar alcohol from the total carbohydrate content. Sugar alcohol is a carbohydrate-based sugar substitute often used to sweeten foods touted as “sugar-free,” and while it has fewer calories than regular sugar, it is still recognized as a carbohydrate. Consequently, depending upon the fiber content and type of sugar alcohol used, even protein bars that claim to be low in net carbs can have a high total carb content.

The protein content will also vary among brands of low-carb protein bars. Some might have a protein content as high as 30 grams, while others could have a protein content as low as 10 grams. Some bars have a nutritional content specifically designed to replace a full meal, while others are meant only to supplement a person's regular meals. It is important, therefore, that a person carefully read the nutritional label on any low-carb protein bar to make sure that particular bar has what he or she is looking for.
