What is a Fasting Cleanse?

A fasting cleanse is a type of diet program that promises to cleanse and detoxify the body while promoting quick weight loss. There are many proponents of fasting cleanses, and many different methods available, though some people are also uncertain about the safety of detoxifying cleanses. If considering a fasting cleanse, it is a good idea to do research first, and to fully understand the risks.

In general, a fasting cleanse consists of the elimination of most or all foods from the diet, and only drinking juice or water for a few days. Fasts generally last for between three and seven days; fasts that last seven days or more generally include some foods such as vegetables and whole grains in addition to liquids. Some popular fasts include items such as lemon juice, honey, or pepper in addition to water.

A fasting cleanse promises to cleanse the body of toxins and detoxify the organs such as the liver and kidneys. People often do cleanses in the hopes of increasing their energy, improving the appearance of their skin, improving mood, and boosting the immune system, among other benefits. Some people also consider fasting in order to jump-start a diet, lose weight quickly, or to cut back on food items such as caffeine or carbohydrates in the diet.

There are some downsides to a fasting cleanse, however. Doctors often do not recommend detoxes such as these, stating that the body is perfectly capable of filtering toxins from the system every day. In addition, a fasting cleanse can have potentially harmful side effects such as dehydration. The weight loss experienced during a cleanse is often only water weight, and will simply come back when the cleanse is finished.

A fasting cleanse often causes one to become bloated; stomach upset and diarrhea are common as well. It is very important to stay hydrated during a cleanse. Anyone who is not in excellent medical health should generally not attempt any type of detoxifying cleanse; it may be a good idea to check with a doctor before beginning a cleanse regardless of health.

There are many different types of fasting cleanses available to try. Search online for more information. A better option, however, might be to simply begin making healthy changes in the diet such as drinking more water, cutting back on alcohol and soda, and adding more vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains in each meal; weight loss may be slower with this method, but may be longer lasting without the potential dangers in a cleanse.
